A Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputy was injured on May 2, 2009, when a pick-up truck crashed into his cruiser in North Shelby County.
A spokesperson with the Sheriff’s Office says Deputy Charles Wallace was responding to a call about a sick baby at a home in the 45-hundred block of Cedar Leaf Cove around 7:00 p.m. when the accident occured.
Deputy Wallace, because of the rainy weather, did not turn on his blue lights or siren.
As he drove south on Raleigh-Millington near Sykes Road, the truck, headed north on Raleigh-Millington, turned left and crashed into the driver’s side door of the squad car.
The impact sent Deputy Wallace’s cruiser off the road and into a field.
The deputy was taken to the hospital and required several stitches for a cut to his head. Late Saturday night, he remained at The Med in stable condition.
Investigators charged the driver of the pick-up, 43 year-old Centeno Martin of Millington, with DUI and failure to yield. The Metro DUI squad says Martin’s blood alcohol content was .13. The legal limit in Tennessee is .08.
Martin was not hurt. There were no passengers in his truck.
