Man charged with DUI, reckless homicide in fatal I-57 rollover crash
A man has been charged with reckless homicide and aggravated Illinois DUI following a Friday night two-vehicle rollover crash on I-57 that killed a 53-year-old man, State Police said.
About 11:15 p.m. Friday, an EMS Plan I response was called for a two-vehicle rollover crash in the southbound lanes of I-57 near Halsted Street, Fire Media Affairs Cmdr. Will Knight said.
One person was dead on the scene of the crash, and two adults were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in serious to critical condition, Knight said.
Leroy Square, 52, of the 3800 block of South Ellis, was pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center at 11:57 p.m., the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said. A Saturday autopsy determined Square died from cervical injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident, according to the medical examiner’s office. His death was ruled an accident.
Lee Blakes, 42, was charged late Saturday with reckless homicide and aggravated DUI, according to Illinois State Police Trooper Ivan Bukaczyk, who said Blakes was the driver of the offending vehicle in the crash, a Chevrolet pickup truck.
The truck and a Ford Expedition were southbound on I-57 near Halsted Street, and one of the vehicles was speeding in an attempt to pass the other, Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Todd Borisy said.
The pickup truck ran into the Expedition, causing both to roll over and one person to be ejected from his vehicle after it rolled into the center median, police said. The ejected man was dead on the scene.
Blakes was the sole occupant of the truck, police said.
Court information for Blakes was not immediately available Sunday morning.
