Connecticut State Police to Host DUI Checkpoints Tonight

13 08.11

The Connecticut State Police and East Haddam Police will be out looking for speeders and intoxicated drivers.

Sobriety checkpoints, DUI road-blocks, and roving patrols are conducted by law enforcement, in an effort to keep our roadways safer.

License. registration, and insurance inspections, as well as ‘field sobriety tests’ will be taking place this evening, Saturday, August 13th.

Driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, driving at high rates of speed, distracted driving, and lack of seat-belt use are all issues that can potentially lead to tragic and often deadly consequences.

The Connecticut State Police, in conjunction with the East Haddam Resident Troopers’ Office and East Haddam Police will be out on location and in the area tonight, looking for speeders and intoxicated drivers.

For more information, you may contact TFC Jeff Rhoades or TFC Steven Bellandese at the East Haddam Resident Troopers’ Office at 860-873-1226, or the Connecticut State Police, Troop K at 860-537-7500.

Cheshire, CT Official In Scuffle After DUI Arrest

05 03.10

Police have released a surveillance video of an officer subduing a Chesire official who was being booked on drunk driving charges.

The suspect, a retirement board member and a former town council candidate, became physically combative with an officer who had let him out of the booking cell so he could use the bathroom, police said.

A second officer entered the room and helped handcuff him.

The suspect had crashed his car into a guardrail on South Meriden Road on Feb. 24 and failed a field sobriety test, police said. He swore at officers and called them names as they drove him to the police station, police said.

During the booking process, he refused to take a Breathalyzer test and later scuffled with the officers. He was charged with driving under the influence, failure to drive right and interfering with an officer.

Rip Torn Gets Probation in DUI Case

23 05.09

Emmy winner and 30 Rock guest star Rip Torn has been sentenced to probation in a drunken-driving case stemming from his December 2008 arrest.

A Connecticut judge approved the actor’s admission into an alcohol-education program on Tuesday, the Associated Press reports. Torn, 78, must also retake his driver’s test because of his severe hearing impairment, but he is still allowed to drive.

Torn was arrested near his Salisbury, Conn., home after police saw him driving in a breakdown lane. He pleaded not guilty to illegal operation of a motor vehicle under the influence and failure to drive in the proper lane in January.

Torn had two previous brushes with the law on similar drunken-driving charges: He paid a fine and temporarily lost his license in April 2007, and was acquitted of drunken driving and causing a crash in 2004.

Connecticut DUI Law

12 09.08

Connecticut DUI arrests trigger two separate cases! First, there is the court case, where the prosecutor seeks the full array of DWI consequences following a drunk driving arrest. However, there is also a Connecticut DMV Hearing, where an action is taken against the driver’s license of the person accused of Connecticut DUI.

Connecticut drunk driving cases are referred to as Connecticut DUI, DWI, or drunk driving. The terms are interchangeable. They are one in the same.

Connecticut DUI law allows for prosecution on two different theories. First, it is illegal to drive under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or a combination of alcohol and drugs. It is not necessary to have any particular blood alcohol level under this theory of drunk driving prosecution.

Connecticut DUI law also allows prosecution for violating the state’s “per se” laws. This makes it a crime to drive with a blood alcohol level of .08% or higher. Under this theory of Connecticut DUI, the impairment of the driver does not matter.

Connecticut DUI law has a 10-year look-back period. This means that if you have a drunk driving conviction that is more than 10 years old, a new Connecticut DWI arrest will be treated as a first-offense. However, if you have one or more drunk driving convictions that are less than 10 years old, the new arrest will be treated as a second- or third-offense, depending upon the number of prior DUI convictions.

Connecticut DUI law requires anyone arrested for Connecticut drunk driving to submit to a test of his or her blood or breath to determine alcohol content. Failure to do so will result in a DMV suspension for a minimum of six months.
