Hours After DUI Sentence, Jalen Rose Gets Speeding Ticket

30 07.11

It was a bad day all around for Jalen Rose on Wednesday.

Less than nine hours after leaving a courthouse where he had been sentenced to 20 days in jail for drunken driving, Rose ran afoul of the law again, authorities said Thursday.

Clawson Police Chief Harry Anderson said Rose, 38, was stopped and ticketed for speeding on Main Street, just north of 14 Mile in Clawson, about 8:47 p.m. Wednesday.

“He was stopped heading south on Main — right in front of the Police Department — at 46 miles an hour in a 25-mile zone,” Anderson said. “There were no other violations or problems related to the stop and he was ticketed for going 10 over the speed limit and allowed to go on his way.”

The speeding offense is the equivalent of a civil infraction, said Rose’s attorney, James Burdick.

It will have no bearing on the drunken driving case and is not considered a violation of his probation, the attorney said.

Shortly before noon Wednesday, Rose, a former NBA basketball player who starred at the University of Michigan and Detroit Southwestern High, was sentenced in Bloomfield Hills District Court for a March 11 incident in which he drove his car off a snowy road in West Bloomfield.

Rose will be on probation for 12 months, during which time he must report to a probation officer and attend alcohol awareness counseling, including an alcohol impact group made up of those whose families have been damaged by drunken drivers.

In the March incident, Rose, who said he had consumed six martinis, was found to have a blood-alcohol level of .12, well over the .08 limit at which a motorist is determined drunk in Michigan.

DUI Costs Barron Hilton $4.9 Million

15 07.11

Paris Hilton’s younger brother Barron has been ordered to hand over a massive $4.9 million to a gas station attendant he allegedly struck with his car on the night he was arrested for driving under the influence.

The then-18-year-old hotel heir was arrested in Malibu, California in 2008 after he was found to be nearly two times over the legal alcohol limit. He pleaded no contest to a charge of DUI and was sentenced to three years’ probation and banned from driving for one year.

Gas station employee Fernando Mendoza Tellez filed suit against Hilton in 2009, demanding damages for the severe injuries suffered and the “multiple surgeries and medical procedures” he has been forced to undergo ever since the alleged incident. Tellez’s lawyer also claims his client has been left with a “permanent disability” as a result of the reported crash.

And Tellez is now set for a huge pay day – a Los Angeles County Superior Court jury ruled in his favour on Friday and demanded Hilton pay up, according to TMZ.com.

Is Hines Ward Getting Special Treatment in DUI Arrest

12 07.11

The ridiculous defense offered by his agent in response to the drunken driving charge lodged against Pittsburgh Steeler Hines Ward in Georgia is that Ward was not impaired, to which reasonable people must say, “So what?” (“Georgia police: Hines Ward impaired prior to DUI arrest”).

It could be difficult to demonstrate whether or not Ward was impaired, but assuming for the moment that he was not, what difference does it make? This argument is like a person who is accused of beating his wife offering that the victim did not suffer permanent injury.

Our system of laws provides that an individual is considered to be driving under the influence of alcohol if the substance is prevalent in his system at or exceeding a certain level, a simple and objective criterion. If Ward’s blood alcohol content exceeded the legal threshold, he should be punished the same as those of us who are not wealthy professional football players and award-winning dancers.

Ditka’s Son Pleads Not Guilty to DUI

08 07.11

In court Friday, Michael Ditka pleaded not guilty to DUI charges during an arraignment hearing.

The 49-year-old son of former Bears coach Mike Ditka was originally arrested on April 20. Police say they spotted his Hummer leaving the Deerfield Village Center around 11:45 p.m. and drive into the rear parking lot of the West Deerfield Township Building.  When officers approached the parked car, officers claim Ditka had “red blood shot eyes and slurred words.”

But according to Ditka’s lawyer Robert Ritacca, Ditka wasn’t actually driving but instead sitting in a parked car.

Court records show this is Ditka’s third time being charged with drunk driving.

Nickelodeon Star Charged WIth DUI In LA

08 07.11

The erstwhile star of Nickelodeon’s “Gigantic” has a little legal problem on his hands.

Ryan Rottman was popped for a DUI Thursday night in Hollywood, E! News has confirmed.

So how’d he get into this mess?

According to an LAPD spokesman, an officer in a patrol car witnessed the TV hunk jump a curb. The cops pulled over Rottman, who allegedly reeked of booze. He was given and flubbed a field sobriety test and then blew a 0.19 on a Breathalyzer — more than double California’s legal limit.

Rottman was taken into custody and booked on suspicion of DUI. He was released from jail a few hours later without posting a bond.

Rottman got his start as an extra in the 2008 big-screen comedy “The House Bunny” and appeared in bit roles in a few other features before landing a plum part last year on “Gigantic” opposite Grace Gummer and Gia Mantegna (better known as the respective daughters of Meryl Streep and Joe Mantegna). The teen dramedy ran for one season before it was canceled in April.

Rottman also dates fellow Nickelodeon star Victoria Justice of “Zoey 101″ fame.

Rick Springfield Charged With DUI

01 07.11

Rick Springfield has been charged with two counts of DUI after his arrest in Malibu in May.

When he was pulled over, he blew a .10 and was so angry at his car being towed away (a $200,000, 1963 Corvette Stingray) that he threatened to kill the officer and their family.

The officials didn’t take the threat seriously however, saying: “It is rare when a drunk doesn’t say something outlandish to police when they’re arrested.”

If convicted on the misdemeanor charges, Springfield faces a maximum punishment of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.
