Denver Broncos’ Kicker Charged With DUI

12 08.11

It’s perfectly acceptable for Broncos kicker Matt Prater to drive a football through the uprights. It’s unacceptable, however, for him to drive his car while intoxicated.

In breaking news, Prater was arrested last week for allegedly driving drunk in Greenwood Village, and for fleeing the scene of an accident.

Prater is in his 5th season out of Central Florida. He has a career average of 79.1% on field goals with a long of 59 yards.

Prater suited up Thursday night for the Broncos first preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys and connected on all three of his field goal attempts.

Consequences will likely come from both the state and from the NFL if Prater is convicted.

Steve Hauschka is the Broncos second team kicker. Hauschka played in the final weeks of the Broncos season last year since Prater sat out with an injury.

Prater signed just signed a contract this July and is slated to receive $1.835 million this year.

More to come as details are released.

If you’ve too been charged with DUI in Greenwood Village, it’s essential for your freedom that you quickly contact a Colorado DUI attorney to discuss your legal options.

Miguel Cabrera’s DUI Hearing Delayed

11 08.11

It’s not likely that Miguel Cabrera’s legal cases in Florida will be over before the Tigers finish the regular season Sept. 28.

A court hearing scheduled for today in Ft. Pierce, Fla., has been delayed until Sept. 15 because depositions that were anticipated had not been taken yet, according to Gayle Braun, assistant state attorney for St. Lucie County.

Cabrera, the Tigers’ All-Star first baseman, was arrested in February for suspicion of driving under the influence and resisting an officer without violence in Ft. Pierce.

His attorney, Michael Kessler, received permission last month to take sworn statements from witnesses who reported seeing Cabrera before his arrest along a rural stretch of highway. Cabrera later said he was en route to the Tigers’ spring training base in Lakeland from his home in south Florida. He refused a breath test to determine his blood-alcohol content when he was arrested.

Illinois LB Ashante Williams Suspended Over DUI Arrest

05 08.11

llinois linebacker Ashante Williams has been suspended indefinitely from Fighting Illini football activities following a DUI arrest early Saturday morning. Williams was arrested just off of the Urbana campus at 1:37 am after he was pulled for an alleged traffic violation. After struggling through a field sobriety test, Williams admitted he had been drinking and was taken to Champaign County jail, where he was released on $100 bail at 5 a.m.

Williams recorded just 19 total tackles in limited playing time last season. However, he was expected to replace Nate Bussey in the Illini starting lineup this season. This latest incident puts his playing status in jeopardy. Should Williams miss any games this season, redshirt freshman Earnest Thomas is expected to step up.

Head coach Ron Zook has yet to release a statement on the matter.

Jalen Rose Begins 20-Day Jail Sentence for DUI

02 08.11

Jalen Rose, a former NBA and Michigan Wolverines star and current ESPN analyst, reported to the Oakland County jail this morning, arriving before 8 a.m. to begin his 20-day sentence for drunk driving.

Rose, in a red shirt and shorts, jogged past television crews near the jail, in the Oakland County complex. “He walked right past whoever was out there,” said Oakland County Sheriff’s Captain Barry Zeeman. Rose, 38, is expected to be released Aug. 18, with two days lopped off his sentence for good time served.

Zeeman said Rose would be separated from the general jail population.

Rose, an analyst for ESPN and former Wolverine standout, was arrested in March after he crashed his Cadillac Escalade on Walnut Lake Road in West Bloomfield. He later admitted to drinking six martinis. A test showed he had a .12 percent blood alcohol level. Under Michigan law, .08 is considered legally drunk.

Last week, 48th district court judge Kimberly Small sentenced Rose to 20 days in jail, but allowed him to report today so he could attend his grandmother’s birthday party. Rose, who is known for his philanthropic work for inner city kids, apologized at the time and said the experience had “humbled and humiliated” him.

Rose, who lives in California, has no prior criminal record. After his release, he will report by mail to his probation officer.

Hours After DUI Sentence, Jalen Rose Gets Speeding Ticket

30 07.11

It was a bad day all around for Jalen Rose on Wednesday.

Less than nine hours after leaving a courthouse where he had been sentenced to 20 days in jail for drunken driving, Rose ran afoul of the law again, authorities said Thursday.

Clawson Police Chief Harry Anderson said Rose, 38, was stopped and ticketed for speeding on Main Street, just north of 14 Mile in Clawson, about 8:47 p.m. Wednesday.

“He was stopped heading south on Main — right in front of the Police Department — at 46 miles an hour in a 25-mile zone,” Anderson said. “There were no other violations or problems related to the stop and he was ticketed for going 10 over the speed limit and allowed to go on his way.”

The speeding offense is the equivalent of a civil infraction, said Rose’s attorney, James Burdick.

It will have no bearing on the drunken driving case and is not considered a violation of his probation, the attorney said.

Shortly before noon Wednesday, Rose, a former NBA basketball player who starred at the University of Michigan and Detroit Southwestern High, was sentenced in Bloomfield Hills District Court for a March 11 incident in which he drove his car off a snowy road in West Bloomfield.

Rose will be on probation for 12 months, during which time he must report to a probation officer and attend alcohol awareness counseling, including an alcohol impact group made up of those whose families have been damaged by drunken drivers.

In the March incident, Rose, who said he had consumed six martinis, was found to have a blood-alcohol level of .12, well over the .08 limit at which a motorist is determined drunk in Michigan.

Former Chicago Bear Cleared of DUI Charges

30 07.11

Cook County prosecutors dismissed drunken-driving charges against WMAQ-Ch. 5 sportscaster and former Chicago Bear Mike Adamle on Friday, saying he was well under the legal limit for alcohol when Evanston police curbed his car during a traffic stop in January.

“I’m extremely grateful I’m done here,” Adamle said outside the Skokie courtroom following the hearing.

Adamle was arrested after authorities said he disobeyed a flashing red traffic signal. Police had said he also exhibited erratic behavior after being taken to the police station, though he registered a blood-alcohol level of 0.04, half the legal limit.

“I couldn’t have been more cooperative,” Adamle said Friday. “I did everything they asked me and then some.”

Adamle said that his arrest and subsequent charges cost him several speaking engagements.

“What they did was really incorrect,” he said.

He also said he was determined to clear his name because an online profile of him included that fact that he had been charged with DUI.

“When you go to Wikipedia and see that under your biography, you have to do something about that,” he said.

Adamle, an Evanston resident, graduated from Northwestern University in 1971 and played for the Bears before retiring in 1977 and going into sports journalism.

He was promoted this week to a full-time sportscaster with the NBC affiliate, said a station representative. The position opened up after sportscaster Daryl Hawks, 38, was found dead in an Atlanta hotel room in May while on assignment.

Jets’ Braylon Edwards Pleads Guilty to Manhattan DUI

23 07.11

New York Jets star Braylon Edwards has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated.

His case will be closed without jail time or probation if he pays a $500 fine. He must continue in an NFL alcohol counseling program that he’s been in since October.

He also gets a six-month driver’s license suspension.

As he left the courthouse Friday, the wide receiver called it a “fair conclusion.”

Police say they initially stopped him in Manhattan around 5 a.m. on Sept. 21 because his Land Rover’s windows were too dark.

Hines Ward Comment About DUI Situation on Facebook

15 07.11

After almost a week of silence, Hines Ward has released a brief statement regarding his DUI arrest on his Facebook page. Here it is:

Fans – I appreciate all the love and support. Thank you! It means a lot to me. I have a great respect for the legal system and am leaving things in the hands of my attorney. I can’t wait for football. I’ve been working out hard. I want to get back to the big show again this year. We have some unfinished business to take care of. So we will be ready to go when we are given the Green light. Here we go! Hines

There isn’t much new here, and of course, this is hardly a clear statement of innocence. The police records surrounding the arrest are pretty incriminating. My guess is that Ward will probably reach some sort of settlement. We’ll see how things turn out. This will be forgotten fairly quickly if indeed the lockout is ending, as Ward might be implying.

Cleveland Indians OF Kearns Pleads Guilty to DUI

12 07.11

Cleveland Indians outfielder Austin Kearns entered a conditional guilty plea to a drunken driving charge in Jessamine County District Court. Kearns’ attorney, Noel Caldwell, entered the plea Tuesday morning.

The conditional guilty plea allows Kearns and his attorney to appeal District Judge Janet Booth’s earlier decision to deny a motion to dismiss the case.

Kearns, who starred at Lafayette High School and was a first-round draft pick by the Cincinnati Reds, was pulled over on Feb. 12 and arrested for DUI.

Is Hines Ward Getting Special Treatment in DUI Arrest

12 07.11

The ridiculous defense offered by his agent in response to the drunken driving charge lodged against Pittsburgh Steeler Hines Ward in Georgia is that Ward was not impaired, to which reasonable people must say, “So what?” (“Georgia police: Hines Ward impaired prior to DUI arrest”).

It could be difficult to demonstrate whether or not Ward was impaired, but assuming for the moment that he was not, what difference does it make? This argument is like a person who is accused of beating his wife offering that the victim did not suffer permanent injury.

Our system of laws provides that an individual is considered to be driving under the influence of alcohol if the substance is prevalent in his system at or exceeding a certain level, a simple and objective criterion. If Ward’s blood alcohol content exceeded the legal threshold, he should be punished the same as those of us who are not wealthy professional football players and award-winning dancers.
