Holiday DUI task force takes to Valley streets

15 12.08

A holiday drunken-driving task force arrested 182 people in a Friday roundup in the Valley, according to a statement released Saturday by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.

The task force helped the program bust more than 800 suspected drunken drivers since Thanksgiving and will continue through the weekend, the release said.

Nine people were arrested Friday on suspicion of aggravated driving under the influence with a total of 59 taken into custody in the course of the roundup, the release said. Aggravated DUI applies to drivers who have a suspended license, a person in the vehicle under the age of 15 or the incident was the person’s third DUI arrest in less than five years.

Extreme DUI arrests, defined by a blood alcohol content over .15, totaled 45 on Friday. The task force has taken 191 people into custody for extreme DUI across the Valley since Thanksgiving.

Last year, 336 people died in the United States in alcohol-related crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Driving impairment typically sets in with a blood-alcohol content of .08, according to Arizona law. The average BAC for all DUI arrests totaled .14, the release states.

In total, more than 100 people were arrested for DUI of drugs and 140 minors were arrested for consuming alcohol, according to the release. More than 3,000 people received traffic citations over the course of the program as well.

The intense DUI coverage will end Dec. 31 as the office stresses a no tolerance approach to DUI of drugs and alcohol.
