Ontario to crack down on drunk driving, speeding
The Ontario government will introduce tough legislation Tuesday, intended to crack down on dangerous driving.
It calls for a zero-tolerance policy on alcohol for new drivers.
Global News has learned the provincial government will enact a law whereby any driver under the age of 21 found with alcohol in their system will face a licence suspension.
There also will be penalties for speeding that will apply to any new driver with a G-1 licence, regardless of age. A first-time offender will face a 30-day licence suspension and a repeat-offender will lose the privilege to drive for 90 days. A third-time offender will have to re-qualify for the right to drive in Ontario.
The plan is in response to a terrible accident last summer in the cottage-country area of Muskoka, in which three young people were killed, following an afternoon of drinking in Port Carling, Ont. Tyler Mulcahy, 20, was behind the wheel of a vehicle that went off the road and into a river on July 3. He, along with two friends were killed.
Mulcahy’s father, Tim, was a huge proponent to amended driving legislation.
